Bariatric Dietitian Rene Norman, RD/LD continues her Tips from Rene today with more options to stay on track with your nutrition while traveling.

In the past month or so, we’ve covered how to get through the airport with protein options. Once you get to your destination, then what? Protein bars, meat jerky and packets of tuna and chicken are options you can pack in your suitcase. If your hotel room has a coffee maker or microwave, you’ve got protein options. You can pack protein powder in your suitcase. Several manufacturers like Unjury, Jay Robb and Syntrax Nectar make single... Read More »

If you are considering weight loss surgery and learning more about The Center for Bariatrics at Bailey Medical Center this year, here is a short video to introduce you to the program, as Bariatric Navigator Russell Vieaux takes you inside Bailey Medical Center and shows how you can get started by attending one of our free monthly seminars.

Judy Mollenkamp and her husband welcome familiar faces, as well as new ones into their Bartlesville home every month. It all started when a small group of bariatric patients decided to start meeting to talk about their common experiences. Judy talked to Dr. JoeBob Kirk and he encouraged the idea of officially forming a support group. “Dr. Kirk has been coming to my house for five years, monthly and the support group has grown from four people to 20 to 30 people per month,” says Judy. “I think meeting the people has just been the best.  People from all walks come wanting the same thing out... My story with bariatric surgery began when I had the Roux-en-Y procedure in August of 2004 at a different facility. I lost half of the weight I needed to lose, but ended up having another child 21 months post-op. For a few years I kept most of the weight off, but without support I gained my weight back. I felt like I had failed. I had kept the surgery secret. I knew no one I could talk to for support.

In January of 2012 I began to seriously focus on my health.  My weight was as high as ever and I was almost 47 years old. Two close family members were dealing with heart disease during... Read More »

Life is fun! I haven’t always felt that way. I was an obese child who grew into an obese adult.  I call it “the family curse” because several family members also had a life-long struggle with excess weight and the complications and health issues that come with it, namely, Type 2 diabetes.

My highest weight was 278 pounds and was accompanied by high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes and unbelievable fatigue.  In addition, my heart stopped beating in 2004 and I have had a pacemaker ever since that day.

I began working out with a group of ladies led by Dana Doshier at what is... Read More »

Ashley Chapman remembers suddenly gaining weight unexpectedly at a young age. Weight loss was something she says she battled from that point on. “I tried everything since I was five years old to lose weight, but nothing ever worked,” she says. Her body, it seemed, appeared to resist weight loss despite her efforts of diet and exercise and even consulting her health care provider to determine what was wrong. “I had my thyroid tested so much that I think it is truly ridiculous. I knew something was wrong with me, but not sure what. Finally, the reproductive endocrinologist informed me the... Read More »

When you ask our patients what they are thankful for, the answers might surprise you if you have not been through the program at The Center for Bariatrics at Bailey Medical Center. “Better health. More energy. My family. My kids. Self-esteem. My joy is back!” are a few things that rise to the top. Then again, if you have been in their shoes or are currently at the beginning of your weight loss journey, then those answers make perfect sense. It is not about a number on the scale. It is about how life is seen completely differently than it did before this new journey.

Yet, many... Read More »

I will admit my weight loss journey has been an exciting one, and it began in the summer of 2013 when I decided that it was time to do something about my weight, because I was tired of not being able to live the life I wanted to live. I went to visit Dr. JoeBob Kirk with the intention of losing weight "my way” - in other words, no surgery. Dr. Kirk was agreeable, and he started the process of finding out more about my health. Oddly enough, and probably only by the grace of God, all of my labs came back within the normal range. On paper, I looked perfectly healthy - no diabetes, no... Read More »
