February is the month we celebrate love and a healthy heart. Does this bring up visions of boxes of chocolates and bouquets of flowers?
For bariatric patients, finding healthier ways to celebrate other than a big box of chocolates may be new to you. Here are some ideas.
- If your loved one like berries, find a small container of fresh berries and give with a note that says, “I love you berry much.” Berries are high in heart healthy antioxidants and fiber.
- A small can of your loved one’s favorite nuts with a note that says “I’m nuts for you” is another idea. Nuts are high in heart healthy fat and fiber.
- Brew a cup of decaf green or herbal tea for you and your sweetie for those healthy antioxidants and water. Tea for two takes on a new, cozy meaning.
- If you simply must have chocolate, keep in mind the type of chocolate that provides heart health benefits is dark chocolate with at least 60% cacao. Lily’s dark chocolate sweetened with stevia is one choice that you can find at Sprouts or online. These chocolate bars can be broken into small squares and savored over several weeks.
- Make your own hot cocoa by stirring together 2 tablespoons of dark chocolate cocoa powder, a packet of stevia (or other diet sweetener) and 8 oz. high protein-low fat milk. Heat in the microwave for 60-90 seconds for a warm way to enjoy a Valentine’s treat. Ghirardelli and Hershey’s make dark chocolate cocoa. Fairlife is a high protein milk becoming popular with our bariatric patients. Enjoy this cup of cocoa with a favorite movie or a sipping after a brisk walk with your loved one.
Ideas that don’t involve food include taking a walk, going for a hike or a bike ride, helping out with a house project, planning a garden or volunteering with American Heart Association events. These are just a few ideas to enjoy with your loved one and make a difference for your community’s heart health.
Enjoy your month of love and heart health!
