Let’s build a lighter, brighter future together

The benefits of weight loss surgery

When diet, exercise and medication aren’t working, weight loss surgery may be an option for treating morbid obesity. Research shows weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, is the most effective way to achieve long-term weight loss. The benefits go beyond what you see on the scale. It can also improve a wide range of other health issues, such as diabetes, heart disease and sleep apnea.

Bariatric surgery may be an option for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more. If you have other serious health conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease, bariatric surgery may be beneficial if your BMI is between 35 and 40. If your BMI is below 35, you will not qualify for surgery.

The Center for Bariatrics at Bailey Medical Center offers several types of procedures, including:

Roux-en-Y (roo-en-wy) gastric bypass

This is the most common procedure. A surgeon creates a small pouch from the stomach and connects it directly to the small intestine. This helps lower the amount of food you can eat in one sitting.

Sleeve gastrectomy

This procedure removes about 80% of the stomach, leaving a long, tube-like pouch. This smaller stomach can't hold as much food. It also produces less of the appetite-regulating hormone ghrelin, which can curb your desire to eat.

SADI-S

Similar to a sleeve gastrectomy, this procedure also divides part of the small intestine. This surgery offers weight loss along with less hunger, more fullness, blood sugar control and diabetes improvement.

Post-op care is critical to the long-term success of bariatric patients. We have made a decision as a program to focus on and provide access to those patients who had surgery at Bailey Medical Center. However, if you need routine follow-up and had bariatric surgery at another MBSAQIP Bariatric Center of Excellence then we will look at these situations on a case-by-case basis. The American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery has specific safety and education standards that govern those programs that receive their Center of Excellence accreditation. This does eliminate all bariatric surgical programs in Mexico. Patients who had surgery in Mexico are not eligible for post-op follow-up at Bailey Medical Center. Please reach out to us at 918-376-8410 or bariatrics@baileymedicalcenter.com.

We offer free virtual and in-person seminars that answer many patients’ most frequently asked questions. You can also reach out to our bariatric coordinator anytime at bariatrics@baileymedicalcenter.com or 918-376-8410.
