The Food Pushers

Blessed are the food and beverage pushers. They are likely a lot more uncomfortable about your new way of eating than you are.

Thanksgiving marks the beginning of an extended holiday season where you will be encountering people who push food and beverages not appropriate for bariatric patients. It might be your grandma at Thanksgiving wondering why you decline her beloved cornbread stuffing. Perhaps your supervisor tries to push you toward the dessert table that your office had catered by the best bakery in the land. Your friend may not understand why you decline a glass of champagne on New Year’s Eve.

This isn’t about their feelings. This is about your health. Having a response ready can help you get through these situations. Acknowledge their effort and communicate your decision. For instance, you could say, “I do love your stuffing/dessert/champagne, but right now I’m full.” Another phrase could be, “Right now, that’s not on my diet. I hope you understand.” Another phrase turns the attention from food to socializing such as, “Wow! That looks amazing, but I’m full right now. Can we catch up instead?”

You may have your own way of politely dealing with the food pushers. Better health after surgery is a blessing to keep in mind as you navigate the holidays. Enjoy the holidays….sensibly!
